The island in Elba is the greatest between the islands of the Tuscan archipelago
and the widest (223,52 km2s) among those Italian after Sicily and Sardinia.
It administratively makes part of the Tuscan province in Livorno and it
is situated in the Sea northern Tyrrhenian, between Corsica and Tuscany,
from which dista about ten kilometers and from which is separate through
the channel of Lead; it has approximately triangular form and it develops
a perimeter of 118 kms with a length of 27 kms and a maximum width of 18.
Primarily mountainous, it culminates to 1019 ms in the Hut mountain. The
coasts, generally tall and rocky, they are very jagged and characterized
by numerous prominences and by deep inlets, constituted by the gulves of
Procchio, of Biodola and of Portoferraio to N, of Field, of Lacona and of
the Stella to S, of Grindstone to E. The geologic structure is rather complex:
the western section is essentially constituted by the vast granite mass
of the Hut mountain; in the central section formations of effusive rocks
prevail, while in that Oriental they are diffused the calcareous rocks and
arenacee, the micascistis gneissici and the schists ardesiaci and carbonaceous.
The climate is relatively very sweet with mild winters and fresh summers.
The population (30.093 abs.), distributed in the eight communes of Field
in the Elba, Capolìveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Brings Blue,
Portoferraio, Rio in the Elba and Rio Marina, devotes him in prevalence
to the crop of the grapevine (appreciated the wines, kind the aleatico)
and the olivo, to the fishing and above all to the connected activities
with the tourism, in continuous expansion. For a long time inactive they

History
Busy at first from the Liguris, then from the Etruschis of Populonia, that
exploited the iron in their furnaces, and therefore from the Siracusanis

by the English (1796), then from French (1799) that with the Peace of Amiens

Archaeology
In the island traces of culture neoliticas of the ceramics exist engraved
phase, ruins of ovens etruschi for the fusion of the metals and launchings
stays of Roman age, among which the ruins of a great Roman villa in work
reticolata in the place Her Caves to 10 kms from Portoferraio.
