950 abitanti. L'abitato è arroccato su di un colle a circa 170 metri s.l.m., nel versante nord-orientale dell'Elba.
Tra i paesi più antichi dell'isola, con origini nell'età del bronzo, conserva numerose tracce del suo passato e tra queste vi sono anche reperti archeologici marini.
Rio nell'Elba, famosa per le sue miniere di ferro che risalgono all'età etrusca, è stata il centro minerario dell'isola fino alla chiusura dei giacimenti.

950 Einwohner, befindet sich der Ort auf einem Hügel 170 m ü. Ms. im nordöstlichen Teil der Insel. Gehört zu den ältesten Orten Elba's, die Vergangenheit lässt sich bis in die Bronzezeit verfolgen. Hier werden zahlreiche Funde als Spuren aus der Vergangenheit konserviert, unter anderem auch Archeologische Funde aus dem Meer.
Rio nell'Elba, berühmt wegen seiner Eisenminen die bis zur Etruskerzeit zurückgehen, ist bis zur Schliessung der Minen das Zentrum des elbanischen Eisenabbaues gewesen.
