Non a caso lo stemma della città di Portoferraio riproduce al centro la nave degli Argonauti di Giasone, che sarebbe qua approdato.
Ma la vera e propria storia del porto inizia con la fondazione di Cosmopoli, come allora si chiamava Portoferraio.
