Portoferraio - Isola d'Elba

11.000 abitanti. Capoluogo e principale centro portuale dell'Elba, si trova sulla costa nordorientale su di un promontorio che ne delimita a nord la baia.
Portoferraio è tra i comuni più antichi dell'isola, le sue origini risalgono ai liguri, agli etruschi e ai greci prima di diventare colonia romana con il nome di Fabricia.
Portoferraio, nell'aspetto che ancor oggi possiamo ammirare, venne edificata per volontà di Cosimo I dei Medici che, dopo averla ribattezzata Cosmopoli, iniziò nel 1548 le grandi opere di fortificazione.

11.000 Einwohner zählt die Hauptstadt der Insel wo sich auch der Haupthafen befindet. Portoferraio liegt an der nordöstlichen Küste auf einem Bergzug der die Bucht im Norden abschliesst.
Portoferraio gehört zu den ältesten Ortschaften der Insel, besiedelt von den Ligurern, den Etruskern und den Griechen, bevor die Stadt zur römischen Kolonie wurde und den Namen Fabricia führte.
Portoferraio wie wir es auch heute noch bewundern können, wurde nach dem Willen Cosimo I dei Medici erbaut, der die Stadt nachdem er sie in Cosmopoli umgetauft hatte im Jahre 1548 mit den Bauarbeiten der Befestigungsanlagen begann.
